The Girl with the Red Scarf’ is a classic of the romance genre. Here, heart rhymes with pain and yet emotion is not confused with kitsch.
Based on the novel ‘Dzhamiliya’ by Aitmatov, the story tells of the young woman Asya. The long-distance lorry driver İlyas (Kadir İnanır), known by everyone as İstanbullu (‘the one from Istanbul’), meets Asya (Türkan Şoray), a young woman from a small village. The two fall madly in love and start a life together. Their romance and happy home life are disrupted when İlyas’ job as a lorry driver is threatened. His desperation leads to carelessness, infidelity and violence. The marriage breaks down due to Ilyas’ alcoholism. Asya and her son Samet find refuge in the house of Cemşit (Ahmet Mekin), who looks after them, cares for them and protects them. Asya finds herself in a dilemma: is love just passion or also a piece of work?
The French poet Louis Aragon wrote of the novel, ‘Dzhamiliya’, that it was the ‘greatest love story in the world’.
