The homosexual Ahmet Yildiz is murdered by his father in 2008. The first officially reported murder of this kind in Turkey inspired the directing duo M. Caner Alper and Mehmet Binay to make their disturbing film Zenne – which means belly dancer.
Three people are at the centre: Ahmet, who was born into a very conservative family, the male belly dancer Can and the German photojournalist Daniel, who has come to Istanbul to make a photo book about the city. A friendship develops between the three young men and an increasingly close relationship develops between Daniel and Ahmet. But Daniel becomes sceptical when Ahmet seems to be hiding something from him and starts seeing someone else. When he confronts Ahmet, he tells him about his family, who have set a spy on him and are now blackmailing him to keep his sexual orientation a secret. Daniel realises the danger and advises Ahmet to flee to Germany together. But you can’t get a passport without completing military service. Ahmet’s parents start to get suspicious…
The drama received 25 awards at international film festivals.
